Riba – Donate your Interest

Understanding Riba and the Importance of Purifying Wealth

In Islam, engaging in Riba (interest) is strictly prohibited. The Qur’an strongly warns against it, emphasising the seriousness of dealing in interest-based transactions. Because of this, it is essential for Muslims to ensure their wealth is free from Riba wherever possible.

Donate Your Riba

We live in a financial system where interest-based transactions are widespread. As a result, it is important to regularly review our finances and identify any income or charges that may involve Riba.

Common sources where Riba may be present include:

  • Savings accounts, ISAs, and other interest-bearing bank products
  • Credit cards, loans, or mortgages with interest or penalty charges
  • Returns gained through lending money, property, or similar assets

What should I do if I have received Riba?

If you have unintentionally accumulated interest, it should be disposed of in a manner that aligns with Islamic principles. One way to do this is by donating it to Emaan Relief.

This helps ensure the money is purified from your wealth while also supporting meaningful charitable work that benefits those in need.

Although Riba-based funds do not count as reward-earning charity for the donor, there is hope that Allah (SWT) rewards the intention of cleansing one’s wealth and seeking what is lawful. Why is Riba prohibited?

The prohibition of Riba is rooted in deep wisdom and justice. It is viewed in Islam as a system that can lead to exploitation, particularly affecting those who are financially vulnerable.

Islam encourages fairness, compassion, and generosity in all financial dealings, and places strong emphasis on charity as a means of supporting society. Riba, by contrast, is seen as contributing to inequality and financial hardship, which is why it is strictly forbidden.

How will Riba donations be used?

Funds donated as Riba are not treated as general charity. Instead, they are allocated only to necessary operational costs, such as transaction and processing fees.

These funds will never be used for acts of worship or sacred purposes, such as constructing mosques or printing copies of the Qur’an.

Prophet Muhammad SAW said:,

“O you who believe, fear Allah and give up what remains of your demand for riba if you are indeed believers. If you do it not, take notice of war from Allah and His Messenger.
